Georgia - the cradle of wine.
UNESCO - WORLD HERITAGE



Georgia is considered the country of origin of viticulture and cultivated grapevine, with indigenous varieties and a tradition that dates back 8000 years into the past. Throughout the world there are 4000 varieties and alone in Georgia grow up today over 500 domestic local grape varieties that are not found anywhere else.

It is believed that even the word "wine" has its origins in the Georgian word "Ghvino".

Archaeologists discovered in the south of Tbilisi, province Kvemo Kartli, wine cores that go back to the 7-8 millennia BC. They also discovered underground clay vessels (Kvevri) it was about 1000 BC Chr. Almost every family in the country produces its own wine - in the traditional clay amphorae (Qvevri).
2013 as the world's oldest form of winemaking was the Qvevri winemaking method, registered in the "Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage 'UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Even famous French winemakers have become intrigued by the ancient winemaking technology and have ordered Qvevri to experiment on their Chateau’s!

NEWS  December 2013

The Intergovernmental Committee of UNESCO for the preservation of intangible cultural heritage has taken at its meeting in December 2013 in Baku, Azerbaijan, 25 cultural traditions and forms of knowledge, new in the "Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The "Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" is to highlight the diversity of the living cultural expressions visible means of selected examples. With the 25 new listings, including an extension, a total of 281 traditional forms of culture from all regions of the world are listed in the Representative List now.

Georgia: Traditional vinification in amphorae (Qvevri). Has this traditional method of vilification its name from the typical egg-shaped pottery vessels, the Qvevri where wine is fermented and stored. As part of the cultural identity of Georgian towns tradition plays a major role in daily life and celebrations. This is reflected in a variety of traditions and traditional songs, where are praised and celebrated wine and grape vines. The knowledge of this heritage is passed down from family, neighbors, friends and all those who participate in the harvest and winemaking.
