Georgia is considered the country of origin of viticulture and cultivated grapevine, with indigenous varieties and a tradition that dates back 8000 years into the past. Throughout the world there are 4000 varieties and alone in Georgia grow up today over 500 domestic local grape varieties that are not found anywhere else.
It is believed that even the word "wine" has its origins in the Georgian word "Ghvino".

The Intergovernmental Committee of UNESCO for the preservation of intangible cultural heritage has taken at its meeting in December 2013 in Baku, Azerbaijan, 25 cultural traditions and forms of knowledge, new in the "Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The "Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" is to highlight the diversity of the living cultural expressions visible means of selected examples.
